Ebru, is the art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water and then trasfmorning this pattern to paper

The special tools of the trade are brushes of horsehair bound to straight rose twigs, a deep tray made of unknotted pinewood, natural earth pigments, cattle gall and tragacanth

This decorative art is used to decorate books, imperial decrees, official correspondence and documents. New forms and techniques were perfected in the process and Turkey remained the center of marbling for many centuries

Unfortunately this art is something that most of the tourists never get to see, mostly because they do not know its existence!

There’s this hidden corner, just after Hagia Sophia, where you can find a Medresesi. A madrassa is the place where Koran is taught and students learn about Islam. Nowadays it’s not working as a madrassa but as a school of arts. There are workshops or ceramics, calligraphy, Ebru and many more

Caferaga Medresesi was built buy Minar Sinan, the most famous Ottoman architect. In a small house close to it, resides an incredible artist which creates the most beautiful paintings by splashing ink on water
